The situation
In their own words
"We used to send the same recommendation email to someone who spent twenty minutes browsing hiking boots as we did to someone who had never visited the site. Now those are two completely different experiences, and the boot browser actually gets an email about boots."
- VP of Marketing, Specialty Outdoor & Lifestyle Retailer
We had customer data everywhere. Purchase history in one system, email engagement in another, website browsing behavior sitting in a separate analytics tool that nobody outside marketing ever looked at. Every channel treated the customer as if it were meeting them for the first time.
A customer could browse hiking boots on our site for twenty minutes, then get a generic email that evening promoting a product category they had no interest in. We knew we were sitting on the data to do better. We just had no way to act on it in real time.
The challenge
What was going wrong
Customer data was fragmented across the retailer's ecommerce platform, email marketing tool, and website analytics, with no shared profile connecting a customer's behavior across channels. Product recommendations on the website and in email campaigns were based on broad segments rather than individual behavior, meaning highly engaged browsers received the same generic messaging as first-time visitors. Marketing could not act on real-time signals like an active browsing session, since the data lived in a separate system from the one sending campaigns.
Common in Retail: Retailers with fragmented customer data across ecommerce, email, and analytics tools need a unified real-time profile before personalization can move beyond static, segment-based campaigns.

Our approach
How we thought about it
Building a real-time profile only matters if the systems downstream can actually act on it the moment it updates, so we prioritized the connection between the CDP and Journey Optimizer over adding more data sources upfront. Getting one real-time triggered journey, based on active browsing behavior, working end to end became the proof point that unlocked buy-in for expanding the personalization program further.
The solution
What Celumai built
We implemented Adobe Real-Time Customer Data Platform to unify behavioral, transactional, and engagement data into a single customer profile, updated continuously as customers interact across web, email, and app. On top of that unified profile, we configured Adobe Journey Optimizer to trigger personalized product recommendations and messaging based on real-time behavior, such as an abandoned browsing session or a repeated category view, rather than static segments refreshed monthly.
The results
What actually changed
Repeat purchase rate increased 37% within two quarters of full rollout, driven largely by real-time triggered messaging responding to active browsing behavior rather than static campaigns. Email click-through rates on personalized recommendations outperformed the previous generic campaigns significantly, and marketing gained the ability to launch real-time triggered journeys without waiting on engineering support for each new campaign.

Adobe Experience Cloud challenges in Retail - what we see most often
Retailers almost always have the underlying customer data needed for real personalization. The problem is rarely a lack of data, it is that the data lives in three or four disconnected systems, none of which can act on what the others know in real time.
Celumai builds Adobe Experience Cloud implementations for retailers where the goal is connecting behavioral, transactional, and engagement data into one profile that marketing can act on immediately, not just a reporting dashboard that gets checked once a week. The highest-value early win is usually one real-time triggered journey working end to end, since that proves the model before expanding scope.
If your personalization is still running on static segments refreshed monthly while your competitors respond to browsing behavior in real time, a unified customer profile is usually the fastest path to closing that gap.
