The situation
In their own words
"We were nervous about AI in a legal context. The model does not replace legal judgment — it handles the pattern recognition so our lawyers can focus on the judgment. That distinction matters enormously."
— Managing Partner, Commercial Law Firm
Our associates were spending the first four days of every contract engagement doing work that was fundamentally about pattern recognition — identifying non-standard clauses, flagging missing provisions, and comparing against our standard position. It was valuable expertise applied to a repetitive task. We wanted to give that time back to work that actually required legal judgment.
The challenge
What was going wrong
The initial contract review process involved reading every clause against a 340-point internal checklist developed over 20 years. Associates had to identify deviations from standard positions, flag missing provisions, and summarise commercial risk — before any senior fee earner reviewed the document. With 60 contracts per week, this consumed 480 associate hours at a cost that could not be passed to clients in full.
Common in Professional Services: Law firms and professional services firms using AI for document processing consistently find that the ROI comes not from replacing legal expertise but from removing the pattern-recognition layer so expertise can be applied where it actually matters.

Our approach
How we thought about it
We analysed 3 years of reviewed contracts to understand the pattern of deviations and flags that the manual process had identified. The AI model was trained on these flagged contracts — learning what a deviation from standard position looked like across different contract types and jurisdictions.
The solution
What Celumai built
We built an AI document processing pipeline integrated with the firm's Dynamics 365 matter management system. Contracts uploaded to a matter automatically trigger a review pipeline that extracts clauses, compares against standard positions, flags deviations, and produces a structured review report. Associates review and validate the AI output rather than starting from blank paper.
The results
What actually changed
First-pass contract review time reduced from 4 days to 2 hours. Associate capacity increased by 34% as review time was freed for advisory work. Deviation detection accuracy reached 94% on the validation test set. Three senior associates redeployed from review work to client advisory.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 challenges in Professional Services — what we see most often
Contract review in commercial law is one of the clearest use cases for AI document processing. The first-pass review — identifying non-standard clauses, flagging deviations from standard positions, checking for missing provisions — is fundamentally a pattern-matching exercise that AI handles well.
The legal judgment required to advise on what those deviations mean commercially and what to negotiate is a different skill entirely. AI handles the first layer. Lawyers handle the second.
Celumai builds AI document processing implementations for professional services firms integrated with existing matter management and CRM systems. The starting point is your own reviewed document library — which becomes the training data for a model calibrated to your firm's specific standards and positions.
